Welcome to the Raton Pass, a National Historic Landmark. Did you know this twisty mountain pass was once a toll road where whiskey wagons were charged double? In the 1860s, entrepreneur “Uncle Dick” Wootton built a safer route over the steep, curved pass but slapped a premium on liquor-hauling wagons—blaming their “dangerous cargo” (and cashing in on the boom!). Today, I-25’s sharp switchbacks still test drivers, but at least your whiskey rides for free. If you are towing anything – SLOW DOWN.
